Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, more commonly known as MRSA, is a type of bacteria that has become resistant to many of the antibiotics typically used to treat staph infections. This resistance makes MRSA infections significantly more difficult to manage and treat, posing a serious threat to public health. Staphylococcus Aureus (staph) is a type of bacteria commonly found on the skin or in the nose of about one-third of the population. Generally, staph bacteria do not cause any harm; however, when they do, they can lead to minor infections, such as boils or pimples. In some cases, staph bacteria can cause serious infections, such as pneumonia, bloodstream infections, or surgical wound infections.
Methicillin was once an effective treatment for these staph infections, but over time, some strains of staph bacteria have developed resistance to methicillin and other antibiotics in the same class, including oxacillin, penicillin, and amoxicillin. Risk factors for CA-MRSA include close skin-to-skin contact, cuts or abrasions, contaminated items and surfaces, crowded living conditions, and poor hygiene.MRSA infections are diagnosed through a laboratory test that identifies the bacteria and determines its antibiotic resistance. Treatment for MRSA often involves antibiotics that the particular strain of bacteria has not yet become resistant to. However, because MRSA is resistant to so many antibiotics, the options for treatment are limited. In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to drain abscesses caused by the infection.
